Nothing less than unprecedented global cooperation is required if the giat panda is to be saved from extinction. The papers in this issue (Zoo Biology, Vol. 22(4), 2003) are a small but important part of the dialogue that precedes effective action. Never before have giant pandas been so intensively studied. As we learn more about their basic biology and the conditions that constrain them in the field and the zoo, their future will be brighter and the world community will celebrate their serenity and their survival. It is science that will save the panda once and for all.

These articles are provided free online by Wiley-Liss, Inc., the publishers of Zoo Biology as a service to the zoological community.
