AAA Annual Meeting/EB 2008
Student/Postdoctoral & Young Faculty Awards

General Requirements & Guidelines for Student/Postdoctoral Awards
- AAA student/postdoctoral member (2008 dues/renewal paid by November 7, 2007).
- First author and presenter at EB 2008.
- Must be giving either a poster or a platform presentation.
- Those presenting AAA posters must be at their poster during designated presentation time (12:30 – 2:00 p.m.). Poster presentation is limited to 5 minutes. Presentation times for non-AAA posters will be arranged individually.
- All competitive awards are presented at the AAA Annual Banquet on Tuesday, April 8; each Travel Awardee is entitled to one free AAA Annual Banquet ticket, but attendance is not required except as described below. Additional tickets may be purchased online prior to the meeting.
- Only competitive award finalists are required to attend the AAA Annual Banquet. Any Student/Postdoctoral Travel Awardee who chooses not to attend the banquet will have their travel award mailed to them after the meeting.
- The RSVP deadline for the AAA Annual Banquet is February 29. Any applicant who has not responded by this date will not be able to attend the banquet.
- All banquet tickets must be picked up by Monday, April 7, in person at the AAA office (Room 9, San Diego Convention Center) during EB 2008.
- Additional requirements and details related to individual awards are noted below.
- Applicants may only be judged for one award. Please select the most appropriate competition.
- Only applications with confirmed abstracts will be considered. No substitution of first author/presenter is allowed.

AAA Young Faculty Travel Award – Supported by AAA Second Century Fund.
- Up to five prizes of $500 awarded on a competitive basis, plus a complimentary AAA Annual Banquet ticket.
- Must have been an AAA member for at least one year prior to abstract deadline (joined by November 15, 2006, & renewed for 2008).
- Must be a junior faculty member who is first or last author and presenter of a poster or a platform presentation at EB 2008.
- Recipients notified about six weeks after deadline; checks distributed at the AAA Annual Banquet on Tuesday, April 8.
AAA Student/Postdoctoral Travel Award
- A travel grant, the option to attend the AAA Annual Banquet; no competition required.
- $250 travel grant to AAA Student/Postdoctoral Members who have joined less than one year prior to the abstract deadline; $350 travel grant to AAA Student/Postdoctoral Members who have been an AAA member for at least one full year prior to the abstract deadline (joined by November 15, 2006, & renewed for 2008).
- Checks are mailed to recipients after the meeting or distributed at the AAA Annual Banquet on Tuesday, April 8 to ticketed attendees (see also General Requirements above).
AAA Presley-Zeiss Postdoctoral Platform Presentation Award – Supported by Carl Zeiss, Inc. to recognize excellence in research using light and/or electron microscopy. Honors former Zeiss microscopy expert Phil Presley.
- First prize: certificate and $500 (funded by Carl Zeiss Inc.); two runners-up: certificate and $150 (funded by AAA).
- Must be a postdoctoral fellow or medical resident/intern (within 5 years of Ph.D. or M.D.) presenting at an AAA platform session.
- Submitted abstracts judged to determine 6 finalists, who are notified approximately 6 weeks after abstract deadline.
- Finalists will be judged in the Presley-Zeiss Platform Session on Saturday, April 5, from 3:30–5 p.m. Finalists must also present in the platform session the abstract was submitted to, if selected by session organizer.
AAA Langman Graduate Student Platform Presentation Award – Honors noted embryologist and educator, Jan Langman.
- First prize: certificate and $500; two runners-up: certificate and $150.
- Must be a graduate student or medical/dental/vet student presenting at an AAA platform session.
- Submitted abstracts judged to determine 6 finalists, who are notified approximately 6 weeks after abstract deadline.
- Finalists will be judged in the Langman Platform Session on Saturday, April 5, from 5:30–7 p.m. Finalists must also present in the platform session the abstract was submitted to, if selected by session organizer.
AAA Postdoctoral Poster Presentation Award
- $400 prize and certificate.
- Submitted abstracts judged to determine up to 12 finalists, who are notified approximately 6 weeks after abstract deadline.
- Must be a postdoctoral fellow or medical resident/intern (within 5 years of Ph.D. or M.D.) giving a poster presentation (also see General Requirements above).
AAA Graduate Student Poster Presentation Award
- $400 prize and certificate.
- Submitted abstracts judged to determine up to 12 finalists, who are notified approximately 6 weeks after abstract deadline.
- Must be a graduate student or medical/dental/vet student giving a poster presentation (also see General Requirements above).
AAA Student/Postdoctoral Education Research Award
- $400 prize and certificate.
- Submitted abstracts judged to determine up to 12 finalists, who are notified approximately 6 weeks after abstract deadline.
- Must be a graduate student, medical/dental/vet student, postdoctoral fellow or medical resident/intern (within 5 years of Ph.D. or M.D.) giving a poster presentation related to education or teaching (also see General Requirements above).
AAA Undergraduate Student Poster Presentation Award
- $400 prize and certificate.
- Must be an undergraduate student giving a poster presentation in an AAA session (also see General Requirements above).
