Sytems & Integrative Biology: AAA seeks increased support for training and research.

FAA and Animal Travel Incidents
In September 2002, the FAA issued a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking
(NPRM) on its Reports by Carriers on Incidents Involving Animals During
Air Transport (Docket N. FAA-2002-13378, Notice No. 02-14). This action
required air carriers that provide scheduled passenger air
transportation to submit monthly to the Secretary of Transportation a
report on any incidents involving loss, injury or death of an animal
during air transport provided by the air carrier. Many biomedical
research societies, including AAA, believe this consequences to this
NPRM will be over regulation. As more information on the subject
becomes available, AAA will respond.

Animals in Research: Benefits to Animals and Humans
National and state organizations provide information about how the use of animals in biomedical research benefits both animals and humans.

Animals in Research: Point/Counterpoint
AAA’s Public Affairs Committee has worked with the Alternatives Research & Development Foundation (ARDF) to develop this frank exchange of views on the present and possible future regarding the use of animals in research. AAA welcomes your comments.

The Benefits of Biomedical Research
Next time you are asked to say a few words about why we should be funding life sciences research, head for this FASEB-published study. It provides an excellent summary of the contribution that our investment in such research has made to the length and quality of life and to the nation's economy.

USDA Proposed Regulation of Rats, Mice & Birds Under Animal Welfare Act
Coverage of rats, mice, and birds under the Animal Welfare Act would add millions of dollars in costs and result in an inordinate regulatory burden that would impede biomedical research. AAA has been very vocal in opposition to this coverage. The following information provides a summary of AAA responses, newsletter articles, and action alerts.

Please share this material with colleagues—including deans and administrators—so that everyone is informed and ready to respond when necessary. Contact AAA at exec@anatomy.org or 301-634-7910 if you have any questions.
