The University of Virginia seeks candidates for an instructional faculty member at the rank of Assistant, Associate or Professor in the Medical Education Department who will serve as Director of Gross Anatomy Education. The successful candidate will function as an educator/scholar with a focus on providing anatomy education to medical students, including dissection laboratories, small-groups, case-based discussions, and Team-Based Learning. S/he will also serve as the Administrative Director of the Gross Anatomy Teaching Facility. The successful candidate will work closely with course directors to integrate anatomy throughout the medical curriculum and to maximize the clinical relevance of anatomy within a systems-based pre-clerkship curriculum. S/he will be encouraged to pursue research in Medical Education and to regularly present and publish their research findings. Advancement in educational research and/or scholarship work is required for promotion. Rank and compensation are contingent upon experience.
Additional duties involve providing administrative oversight and support for the Gross Anatomy and Surgical Skills Facility, providing assistance in facility-oriented planning and administration matters, such as space and resource allocation, collaborating with the Gross Anatomy and Surgical Skills Facility Laboratory Coordinator and faculty to anticipate needs, and actively engaging in the performance management process to ensure that expectations are clear and faculty and staff are supported in their work and receive frequent and constructive feedback.
The successful applicant must have a PhD and/or MD/DO/DC degree with a minimum of five years teaching experience in human anatomy and embryology for medical students, including whole body, dissection-based human anatomy laboratory instruction. Candidates should have a commitment to excellence in teaching, good communication skills, and experience in computer-based teaching and learning.
Preference will be given to candidates with a record of scholarly publication and presentation in anatomical sciences and/or medical education and to candidates with demonstrated teaching skills, as evidenced by outstanding teaching evaluations and/or a track record of teaching innovations and awards. Experience teaching in an integrated basic science medical school curriculum is also desired, as is experience in course leadership.
