Sarrafian's Anatomy of the Foot and Ankle

Edited by Armen S. Kelikian
Lippincott Williams & Wilkins, 2011, Third Edition, 759 pages, 964 figures, 140 MRIs, $250

The wealth of information compiled by Shahan Sarrafian in the first two editions has been expanded and presented in a much improved format by Armen Kelikian.  The illustrations are sharper in appearance, the formatting of the legends is improved, and the overall presentation with a different colored font for chapter headings and sections improves the appearance and makes it easier to locate information.

The book is divided into two sections. The first contains the descriptive anatomy of the foot and ankle and is organized into chapters, starting with developmental anatomy followed by systemic anatomy (osteology, soft tissue, arthrology, muscles, angiology, and nerves) and ending with chapters on topographical, cross sectional, and functional anatomy. This sequencing provides an in-depth knowledge of the anatomy starting with the skeletal components and proceeding superficially.  These chapters were present in the second edition but they have been expanded to include additional information and numerous illustrations of both normal anatomical structures and variations.

The second section, which covers applied anatomy, is organized into chapters on arthroscopy, angiosomes, diagnostic imaging, and ultrasound of the foot and ankle.  Included in these chapters is an MRI atlas of sagittal, coronal, and axial sections of the ankle and forefoot.  These chapters are new in the third edition and provide an excellent clinical application of the anatomy of the foot and ankle. All chapters are followed by an extensive list of references.

This latest edition is an optimal resource for anyone seeking detailed information on the anatomy of the foot and ankle and for those caring for patients with foot and ankle problems.  It will serve as an excellent reference.
