Criteria for Scholars  

Applicants will be selected based on the following considerations:

Education
By the start of the program, applicants must meet one of the following qualifications:
  • Terminal doctoral degree in research (PhD, EdD, ScD, or equivalent) or equivalent work experience.
  • Professional degree in health sciences at the doctoral level (MD, DVM, DDS, DPT, or equivalent) or equivalent work experience.
Career Stage

Academic professionals (teaching OR research focused), meeting any of the criteria below, are encouraged to apply.

  • An early-stage faculty member within 10 years of their initial appointment.
  • A medical/healthcare resident or fellow who intends to enter an academic job market within the next 2 years.
  • In the last year of a postdoctoral appointment and seeking an academic appointment, or a senior graduate student who will hold a doctoral or professional degree.
  • An individual who holds an academic position and has not yet completed a terminal doctoral degree in research or a professional doctoral degree in the health sciences.
  • An individual who holds an academic position for which a terminal doctoral degree is not required.
 
Background and Experiences

The applicant's lived experiences and/or work align with AAA's mission and the applicant either: 

  • demonstrates a record of breaking down barriers or creating a collaborative environment; or
  • demonstrates individual hardships or experience with systematic barriers that have impacted their progression through academia, which may include an applicant's status as a first-generation student, family responsibilities, and/or geographic restrictions.

Materials Required for Scholar Application
  • Completion of AAA online profile
  • Applicant’s Curriculum Vitae (5-page maximum)
  • Provide a statement (no more than 750 words) to answer the following questions: What is your current situation and challenges? How do you think the Anatomy Scholars Program will assist you in the progression of your career in academia? What are your five-year career goals?
  • If you currently (1) hold an academic position and have not yet completed the terminal degree in research or a professional degree in health sciences, or (2) hold and academic position for which a terminal doctoral degree is not required, provide a statement (no more than 250 words) to answer the following questions: Describe your current position, the degree requirements for the position, and your plans for academic training. Additionally, explain why you feel you should be considered for the program. 
  • Two letters of support detailing the potential of the applicant for a career in academia. (A place will be provided in the application to upload letters.)
  • Letter from a professional reference, letter from a colleague / peer
  • Letter from department chair/supervisor OR letter of good standing from current employer (Dean of Faculty Affairs or College Dean)
  • List of potential mentors from the applicant’s home institution (no more than 5). The applicant will be required to identify at least one Local Mentor from the institution in the first quarter of the Program.  In the event a Local Mentor from the institution cannot be identified, individuals at neighboring institutions may be considered.
